Graduate Student Policy Seminar

The Graduate Student Policy Seminar provides graduate students with opportunities to interact with researchers and policymakers who are knowledgeable about critical public policy issues related to higher education. The seminar also offers participants an opportunity to engage other advanced graduate students with similar interests and ambitions from universities across the nation.

No more than two students per university may be nominated by a program. If more than one name is submitted by your program, please indicate rank order. Consequently, nominations should be coordinated through a designated faculty member or staff person of the nominating program before submission.

Date & Time

  • This year’s Policy Seminar will be held at the Hilton Portland Downtown, the headquarter hotel for the ASHE Annual Meeting. The Seminar will begin at noon on Wednesday, November 13th and conclude by noon on Thursday, November 14th.


Registration Fees

  • The seminar fee of $125 for ASHE members and $150 for non-members covers materials, dinner on Wednesday, continental breakfast on Thursday, and refreshments. The fee is expected to be covered by the program from which a student is selected and payment is required within two weeks of the selection of your nominee. Payments can be made by credit card, or an institutional or personal check. A registration link with instructions for payment will be sent with the acceptance notification.

    • Note: Nominations should be submitted by a Program Coordinator/Director or Graduate Advisor
  • Nominations Close: September 15, Noon Pacific
  • Notifications: September 25
  • Registration and Payment Deadline: October 31

To complete the nomination form, you will need the following:
  • Nominator Name, Organization, Role, Email, Phone Number
  • Nominee Name, Organization, Role, Email, Phone Number
  • Nominee CV/Resume
  • Answers to the following questions:
    • Has student previously attended ASHE Graduate Student Policy Seminar? 
    • In the space provided below, briefly (200 words max.) describe the student's background and interest in policy studies. Preferred participants are advanced doctoral students who are at or near the dissertation stage.
    • Please provide a brief abstract (200 words max.) outlining the nominee's current higher education policy project. 
    • Please provide a brief (200 words max.) biography of the nominee 
    • Multiple nominations from one university must be prioritized. Please check this student's rank (First or Second)
  • The seminar fee covers materials, dinner on Wednesday, breakfast on Thursday, and refreshment breaks. The fee is expected to be covered by the program from which the student is selected and payment is required within two weeks of the selection of your nominee. Payment can be made by credit card, or institution or personal check. The ASHE Office will send a registration link with instructions for payment with the acceptance notification. The ASHE Conference Registration Fee is additional and separate from this seminar fee. The nominee's program/department/institution will cover the $125 fee for ASHE members or $150 fee for non-members if the nominee is selected.
