SEEDS Postdoctoral Scholar-Research Associate
USC Postdoctoral Scholar: The SEEDS (Student Engagement, Exploration, and Development in STEM) Project: Enhancing Outcomes for Low-Income and Minority Students

The University of Southern California’s Center for Education, Identity and Social Justice is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to work in collaboration with the co-PIs, Darnell Cole, PhD., and Christopher Newman, Ph.D., and the center’s co-Director, Shafiqa Ahmadi, JD., on a quasi-experimental research project supported by the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation and in collaboration with the Youth Development Department City of Los Angeles. This position provides a unique opportunity to help structure a STEM educational intervention for middle school and college students and examine the relationship between the intervention on students’ academic outcomes using mixed-methods research techniques.

The postdoctoral scholar will organize, manage and analyze complex, longitudinal administrative datasets and draft presentations, reports, and policy briefs about the analyses. The postdoctoral scholar will also help secure data agreements with LAUSD, Youth Development Department City of Los Angeles, and USC, as well as assist with grant proposals to extend this particular study.

The postdoctoral scholar will:
  • organize mentoring experiences between the cohort of participants;
  • coordinate the data collection activities related to this project;
  • conduct on-site data collection in schools;
  • conduct the data management and analysis for this project;
  • conduct literature reviews; draft presentations, reports, and policy briefs;
  • submit proposals to conferences (e.g., ASHE, AERA, ); and
  • present at frequent meetings with practitioner partners.

Specifically, project activities will involve:
  • communicating with LAUSD and Youth Development Department City of Los Angeles staff;
  • coordinating outreach to Youth Development Department City of Los Angeles mentors, merging, managing, coding, and cleaning complex, data sets;
  • creating codebooks and well-organized, well-commented code;
  • analyzing and graphing data;
  • writing about results for both practitioner and research audiences;
  • drafting reports and scholarly papers;
  • assisting with grant proposals; and regularly attending planning and project meetings.

The postdoc will also have the opportunity to devote time to pre-existing and developing projects and, given the current COVID-19 conditions, wearing masks and following USC’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy is required to gain access to various educational spaces.

Requirements We are particularly interested in applicants who have:
  • Experience collecting interview and survey data.
  • Experience coding, merging, and managing complex longitudinal datasets in education
  • Experience using Stata (or SPSS) and NVIVO to manage, analyze, and display data
  • Experience using matching techniques to estimate causal effects from observational data
  • The inter-personal skills needed for participating successfully in a collaborative research evaluation
  • Experience and/or training in K-12 education in the U.S. and/or in the postsecondary success of historically underserved students in the U.S. (e.g., first generation, English learners, and low-income students)
  • A doctoral degree in the social and behavioral sciences or education
  • Keen attention to detail and an excellent work ethic
  • Genuine interest in research intended to help improve the quality and equity of students’ educational experiences and outcomes
  • Experience conducting rigorous, high-quality research, and publishing in academic journals, and experience translating research findings into materials and presentations useful for practitioner audiences
