Scholar-in-Residence
The Scholar-in-Residence at Wabash College is an academic-year, residential fellowship that supports full-time research and publication. The disciplinary field, project design, and research approach are open. Successful applicants will have an interest in engaging with our students and participating in the intellectual life of the College during the fellowship term and will propose a project that contributes to one or more of these vital conversations on the future of residential higher education:
 
  • Residential liberal arts colleges and the success of first-generation students, students of Color, and/or Pell grant-eligible students (“new majority” students)
  • Liberal arts curriculum and new majority student success
  • Men and masculinities
  • Men and mental health and/or mental health on campus
  • Minority student engagement and belonging at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs)
  • Community engagement in higher education, especially in rural communities

Wabash has begun a strategic transformation to advance the success of its first-generation students, students of Color, and students from low-income families. With external grant funding, these efforts will include the Scholar-in-Residence position. The Scholar-in-Residence will be an important interlocutor for our campus as we expand our own work to support new majority students.

Applicants are invited in their proposals to offer other ideas for how they might contribute to our campus conversations.

Wabash will take meaningful steps towards its goal of expanding student success by learning together with the Scholar-in-Residence.

While the primary focus of the position is the research project, the Scholar-in-Residence will also contribute to campus conversations on student success and sense of belonging in one or more of the following ways:
 
  • a lecture series;
  • a campus or community-based project that Wabash can later sustain;
  • one undergraduate course (or co-taught course); and/or
  • interaction with students and faculty on high-impact practices that promote student persistence and success.

The preferred start date for this position is August 1, 2022, though we will seek to accommodate the successful candidate’s leave time with their home institution. This position provides salary, benefits, private office space, relocation costs, and a small fund to support research, travel, and related needs. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Wabash College is home to the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020. Approximately 30% of our students are federal Pell Grant recipients, one-third of our students are first-generation college students, and 19% of our students identify as domestic students of Color. Wabash is a member of the USC Race and Equity Center’s Liberal Arts Colleges Racial Equity Leadership Alliance, a top-60 Liberal Arts College according to U.S. News, and a member of Colleges That Change Lives. Additionally, the Center of Inquiry, which led the Wabash National Study and is home to the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS), is located on the Wabash campus. Many students, staff, and faculty find the close-knit community of the residential college one of the most rewarding aspects of their time here.
