Department Chair, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies
Primary Responsibilities:

The Chair reports to the Dean of the College and works collaboratively with the college leadership team while advocating for the interests of the department. The Chair:
  • is responsible for the administration of the department and provides leadership in support of faculty research, teaching, and service efforts;
  • coordinates and implements the department’s strategic plans;
  • recruits, hires, and supervises faculty and departmental staff;
  • manages departmental budgets; and
  • promotes the department through representation in college, university, and external strategic initiatives.

The Chair is also expected to engage in research, teaching, publication, externally funded projects, and other professional activities.

Additional Responsibilities:

The Chair is expected to engage and expand our partnerships with the professional community constituencies within San Antonio and beyond and provide leadership for the delivery of current and prospective off-campus and distance education graduate programs. The Chair teaches courses typically in the evening, including distance/online/hybrid and/or off-campus courses.

The successful candidate will teach courses in leadership/administration, policy and/or social foundations across the P-20 spectrum. The Chair is expected to be involved in advising students and guiding their doctoral research, serving on and chairing doctoral dissertation committees.

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) at The University of Texas at San Antonio seeks a visionary and creative Department Chair with strong leadership skills at the rank of Full Professor or advanced Associate Professor. The Chair will provide a strong forward-looking vision for leadership of a department focused on educational leadership, higher education, and policy, starting no later than August 1, 2022.

The Chair is expected to promote and foster a collaborative and supportive environment. The department is building a R1 research professional learning community dedicated to collegial program development, scholarship, the preparation of school and college leaders to serve culturally diverse learners across a variety of academic contexts, and college student success. The successful candidate understands the demands and challenges associated with an aspiring R1 university and will support faculty excellence and student success and guide the department to the next level of academic distinction. The Chair will actively demonstrate a commitment to collegial leadership, diversity, and positive outcomes for all students, faculty, and stakeholders. Important consideration will be given to candidates using practices of equity in education that address urban and rural populations, LGBTQIA+ populations, people with disabilities, and other historically underrepresented communities.

Requirements Required Qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate in either educational leadership, higher education administration, educational policy, educational foundations, or a closely related field.
  • A distinguished record of scholarship appropriate for the rank hired.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  • Professional experience with, and knowledge of, students from culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • A demonstrated record of mentoring and leadership in professional service to the university and the candidate’s field of expertise.
  • Experiences with university partnership programs in P-20 organizations.
  • Background in providing formal and/or informal leadership within an educational organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in chairing doctoral dissertation committees.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in educational leadership and social and educational theory.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and sustaining partnerships with schools, colleges and communities.
