Assistant Director, Public History Project
The Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in association with the Office of the Chancellor, seeks an innovative, creative, highly organized scholar and public historian who will work closely with the Director of the Public History Project to create and support exhibit development, organize events, and assist in the day-to-day operations and management of the Project.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Public History Project, established and funded by the Office of the Chancellor, exists to recover, acknowledge, and interpret the history of exclusion on the campus, especially through the voices of those who experienced and resisted it. As the Project moves from its initial research phase to focus on its public-facing work, the university seeks a scholar with public history expertise to support the Director in exhibit development, digital humanities project design, and the facilitation and planning of campus discussions and events. The Associate Director will be particularly responsible for engaging diverse audiences across campus.
The primary tasks of the Associate Director will include:\
- Exhibit Development--The Associate Director will support the exhibit development process. In partnership with the Project Director, they will assist and support the vision of the exhibit throughout the exhibit development process from conception to installation.
- Transform the Project's archive of historical research into narrative and interpretive text for a large-scale exhibit set to open in the Fall of 2022.
- Work with a range of campus stakeholders and partners to meet exhibit development timelines.
- Coordinate the incorporation of archival material into the final exhibit, including managing digital photo reproductions and rights, and supporting the transfer of archival materials to the exhibit site.
Facilitation and Event Organization:
The Associate Director's role will include organizing large-engagement events (1,000+ attendees), and facilitating medium- (50-75 attendees) and small- (20-50 attendees) scale events, discussions, and working groups. The Associate Director will also meaningfully engage with key campus and community stakeholders in the following ways:
- Maintain partnerships with key stakeholders and community members to foster community engagement.
- Develop events in collaboration with stakeholders and campus partners, including faculty, staff, students, and administrators.
- Handle logistical tasks such as organizing digital events/booking physical rooms, promoting events, and preparing for facilitation.
- Facilitate and co-facilitate events.
The Associate Director will assist the Project Director with the large-scale management of the Project in the following ways:
- Support the project's established timeline as it relates to ancillary projects within the larger goals of the Project, including managing blog publications, supporting the creation of an online archival database, and assisting with communications.
- Manage relationships with campus partners and stakeholders to meet project deadlines.
- Handle general logistical tasks as assigned by the Project Director.

- Bachelor's Degree in public history, museum studies, or a closely related field.
- Master's Degree
- Extensive experience may be substituted for a graduate degree.
- 1+ years experience in museum education or public programming;
- 1+ years experience with community-engaged research and/or scholarship;
- experience with small- and large-group facilitation;
- experience and expertise in writing for a public audience;
- a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of issues concerning racial and social justice; and
- a background of working with an array of marginalized communities, including but not limited to people of color, LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, immigrants, and religious minorities.
- The successful candidate will also have experience with project management, including managing project timelines and partnerships.
- The Associate Director will work closely with the Project Director and an advisory committee composed of faculty, staff, students, and community members, so evidence of good interpersonal communication and collaborative skills is essential.
