Deputy Director, SEA Change
AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a Deputy Director to join our Inclusive STEMM Ecosystems for Equity & Diversity (ISEED) team. The Deputy Director will support the strategic direction and operation of one of AAAS’s marquee initiatives, STEMM Equity Achievement (SEA) Change. SEA Change is a comprehensive initiative from AAAS that implements a proven self-assessments process to effect sustainable change toward diverse, equitable, and inclusive STEMM at U.S. institutions of higher education. The Deputy Director provides team leadership, strategic direction, and operationalization for this initiative and reports to the Director of ISEED. You will serve as a representative of both the SEA Change Founder and Director and the ISEED Director in developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on tomorrow’s STEMM workforce.

What You’ll Do:
  • Provide strategic leadership, direction, and advanced project management for AAAS’s SEA Change (SC) Initiative, a $1.7M initiative supported by approximately eight grants and a team of six people implementing SC Awards, SC Institute, SC Community, & SC Biomedicine.
  • Support pre-award grant development through partner and funder identification, new project concept development, and proposal and budget preparation.
  • Oversee post-award grant management through project workplans, management of grant expenditures, execution of project activities, assessment and evaluation activities, regular project reports, and dissemination of project deliverables
  • Provide intellectual contribution and research to ISEED initiatives, and specifically SEA Change.
  • Develop project-related content highlighting research to support underrepresented groups in STEMM and equity-focused systemic change.
  • Collaborate with the ISEED & SEA Change Directors to develop and publish content for scholarly and public outlets (e.g., articles, presentations, panels, etc.)
ISEED Unit Support
  • Contribute to developing, implementing, and iterating the ISEED strategic plan.

Requirements
  • Doctorate in STEMM, Education, or a related field (or demonstrated success on projects of similar scope). 7-10 years’ experience in program development and implementation with responsibilities including business plan development, financial management, assessment of program impact, and project management
  • Demonstrated experience working in STEMM Education or STEMM diversity, equity & inclusion efforts
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in organizational change or systemic change efforts.
  • Previous supervision or team leadership experience and management of direct reports
  • Demonstrated experience writing, receiving, and managing grants, and budget
  • Experience with STEMM policy and initiatives related to education, diversity, equity & inclusion preferred
  • Expert knowledge and experience engaging with inclusive postsecondary STEMM enterprise, capacity-building issues for change and transformation, and broadening participation in STEMM.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and strong interpersonal skills to make decisions balanced with an understanding of when to consult with supervisor for guidance, strategic direction, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while providing supervision to project teams to enable the successful progress and completion of project goals.
