The University of Rhode Island invites applications for the Dean of University College for Academic Success (UCAS).

BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Provide visionary, innovative leadership to UCAS and the greater University community. This includes advising, programs for new first year and transfer students, undecided students and athletes, orientation and other new student programs, and the Academic Enhancement Center, and to the special academic programs including the Center for Career and Experiential Education, Transfer Resource Center, Prior Learning Assessment, Service Learning, Early Alert, and special academic programs. Responsible for creating an atmosphere conducive to the intellectual growth and development of students, staff, and the greater community. Represent undergraduate student interests on appropriate University committees, assume a leadership role in the development of advisement procedures, and in concert with the other academic deans participate in the development of the academic programs of the University. Work with the University community to enhance current UCAS support services with a strong lens on diversity, equity, and inclusion and support the University with enhanced needs to the current academic advising and support structures at the University.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for managing and further developing academic programs and services which support the academic mission of the University and are responsive to the changing needs and interests of undergraduate students.
  • Work with the academic colleges and University leadership to envision an undergraduate academic advising model that supports all students and helps students build affinity to the University, their majors, and colleges.
  • Work with the University community to enhance URI’s first year seminar (currently URI 101) and other courses to meet the needs of today’s students.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of a busy academic unit that includes Academic Enhancement Center, Center for Career and Experiential Education, New Student Programs, Early Alert and Academic Support Services, Transfer Resource Center, University College Academic Advising, Advising for Student Athletes and various cross-campus committees and collaborations.
  • Provide mentoring, leadership, vision, training, support, wisdom, encouragement, and role modeling for a college with over 50 staff members.
  • Work closely with the Deans and staff of the academic colleges, the Division of Student Life, Admission and Enrollment Services, and other offices and services to foster collaborative direction to and coordination among the various colleges, offices, and programs in University College and across the University.
  • Collaborate with Institutional Research and other offices to provide the University with data concerning measures of student success.
  • Stay connected with national trends and collaborate across the institution to design interventions and strategies for student academic success.
  • As the public, flagship research University in Rhode Island, collaborate with faculty, staff, and across-divisions on research related to students, student success and timely and equitable degree completion.
  • In collaboration with the new Assistant Dean in University College for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), provide leadership and support of all initiatives designed to foster equity in student outcomes, staff development, and support of DEI.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as a member of the Dean’s Council.
  • Represent the University on appropriate University and external committees. Collaborate with the higher education community within Rhode Island and beyond.
  • Within area of responsibility, oversee adherence to rules, regulations and procedures mandated and/or recommended by the NCAA and the University.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements REQUIRED:

1. An earned doctoral degree.

2. Minimum of seven years of experience in progressively responsible positions of leadership in higher education with a focus on student success, academic progress, and degree completion.

3. Demonstrated record of developing and leading innovative undergraduate student success programs.

4. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

5. Demonstrated proficiency with written communication skills.

6. Demonstrated ability to prepare and present reports.

7. Demonstrated supervisory experience.

8. Demonstrated data-driven record of initiating and/or strengthening student success and retention programs.

9. Demonstrated experience and dedication to integrating issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in your work.

10. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

11. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across divisions to foster student success.

12. Demonstrated knowledge of and involvement in national organizations, trends and initiatives (such as those centered around student onboarding, first year students, student success and retention, etc.)
