About the Position: 
We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our Academic Advising leadership team and be part of a team of Directors as leaders and mentors of the college-based advising teams. The Director of Academic Advising will lead two college advising teams focused on delivering equitable, top-notch advising for all new and continuing students. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Our Academic Advising mission is to work in a collaborative partnership with students, a shared responsibility, where the advisor and student are equally invested in the educational process and holistic development of the student.
 
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Academic Advising, the Director of Academic Advising, Training and Professional Development will be part of a team of Directors as leaders and mentors of the college-based advising team. The team of directors, working collectively, will implement the vision, goals, and objectives of Academic Advising at California State University, Fullerton. At Cal State Fullerton, the Division of Academic Affairs empowers students to fulfill their academic goals and to pursue their personal purpose and professional aims.
 
In conjunction with college leadership, the Director of Academic Advising, Training and Professional Development ensures all students will be successful in navigating their academic journey, starting at matriculation through graduation. The Cal State Fullerton academic advising enterprise is a critical unit in the university's objective to eliminate inequities in student success outcomes. Partners with colleagues to influence the strategic implementation of student success initiatives and enrollment management strategies of the university.
 
Staff members of two college-based Advising Teams will report to the Director of Academic Advising, Training and Professional Development, who will collaborate with Associate Deans, college Advising Team members, faculty academic advisors, and other advising/counseling professionals to identify and implement strategic interventions and programs so that all students will achieve their goals to succeed academically and personally. In supervising professional academic advising staff members in the Advising Teams, the Director of Academic Advising, Training and Professional Development is responsible for the development of the professional advising staff.
 
In addition to leading two college-based advising teams, this role will lead the Training and Professional Development strategic area of the academic advising practice, which will include being responsible for comprehensive personnel administration, including selection and training regarding policies, practices, and procedures. Delivers training on utilizing technology tools and advising-related policies and procedures. The training formats may include online, self-paced, in-person small and large group retreats and short sessions, live webinars, and other forms of training. Works with Directors, Assistant Directors, and Associate Deans or designee, to identify professional development needs and priorities that will support holistic, relationship-and theory-based academic advising strategies. Supports academic advising enterprise campus-wide through the development, coordination, and delivery of a variety of theory-to-practice-based professional development experiences.
 
Identifies and plans programmatic and professional development strategies that center on social justice and anti-racist values in academic advising practice. Plans and implements a professional development program that centers and promotes the expertise of staff self-exploration and identity development, ongoing learning in fields related to serving diverse student communities and identities, student development, and academic advising theory. Maintains a working knowledge of best advising profession practices and develop implementation plans for said practices, in collaboration with Student Success leadership. Supervises and manages the operational strategies of the university’s academic advising unit, continuously identifying opportunities to remove barriers to student success and to improve comprehensive advising services to students. Other duties as assigned.
 
Essential Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in higher education leadership, college student development or a related field. A minimum of five years of increasing coordinator and/or managerial responsibilities, in a higher education environment. Strong understanding and experience in contributing to complex, dynamic academic advising and/or student success programs in Minority Serving Institutions (e.g., HSIs, HBCUs, and AANAPISIs), and/or in programs to advance the academic success of first-gen students and underrepresented students. Demonstrate exemplary professionalism (to include appropriate confidentiality), commitment to equity and inclusion, lifelong learning, and self-professional development. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Excellent written and verbal communication, ability to communicate to a variety of audiences using multiple channels of communication, develop and deliver presentations. Ability to lead and manage multiple projects and prioritize short- and long-term goals and responsibilities with frequent interruptions.
 
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
 
Preferred Qualifications
Earned doctorate in a field relevant to this role from an accredited institution. Knowledge of advising multiple majors, colleges, and schools. Familiarity with professional, global industry advising standards and best practices. Proven skill in evaluating academic records. Knowledge of academic program administration and career counseling principles. Experience with data analytics and technology tools as they relate to planning, data-driven program development and assessment such as Educational Advisory Board, Tableau, Canvas, and PeopleSoft. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments. Ability to maintain confidentiality and spirit of teamwork and adaptability to change, fostering a cooperative environment. Ability to select, supervise and train represented and non-represented staff including, organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments and assessing performance. Knowledge of educational theory and principles and experience in practical application of advising techniques. Knowledge of research-based evidence and frameworks about underrepresented students’ trajectories and experiences in higher education.
