Postdoctoral Researcher - Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society
The Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a PhD in Organizational Behavior, Higher Education, or a related field. Research will be primarily focused on the nature of interdisciplinary collaboration in the academy, with an emphasis on how these collaborations are structured, managed, and embedded within a university culture and can best catalyze cross-department and cross-college collaboration.
The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to study and contribute to the operation of a major institute as it grows, and will be encouraged to develop and test hypotheses through the Institute. It is expected that this will result in significant research contributions to organizational behavior, strategy, and higher education research. Examples of areas of research include:
  • Structural organization of interdisciplinary institutes, including consideration of the need for agility in dynamic academic environments
  • Integration of interdisciplinary institutes into the organizational and operational structure of universities
  • Processes to define and guide Institute resource allocation and to determine strategic directions
  • Preferred use and design of interdisciplinary spaces
  • Methods for connecting undergraduates with interdisciplinary research
  • Pedagogical approaches to interdisciplinary teaching
  • Methods for optimizing interdisciplinary collaborative interaction
The researcher will also be asked to assume some responsibilities related to the operation of the Institute, to meet its mission. In addition, the fellow will assist the director in organizing and managing Institute activities as needed. It is anticipated that these will be complementary to the fellow’s research and will aid her understanding and interaction with key Institute stakeholders.
Review of candidates for the positions will begin immediately and will continue until the position has been filled. Applicants should email a curriculum vitae and a letter (1 to 2 pages) indicating how your professional interests, experience, research goals, and education (including courses, dissertation and other research products) prepare you to meet the job description. Application materials can be sent to Greg Adelsberger, Institute Director of Finance and Operations, at gregory.adelsberger@bc.edu.
The Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society is the centerpiece of the 150,000-square-foot integrated science and engineering facility that opened in early 2022 and is ushering in a new era of interdisciplinary collaboration and research at Boston College. The Institute takes an integrative approach to research and pedagogy, with initiatives designed to investigate complex global issues related to the environment, energy, and health from an interdisciplinary perspective. More information can be found on the Institute’s website.
