Graduate Research Associate (Academic Year)
The American Council on Education’s (ACE) Graduate Research Associate Program is housed in ACE’s Learning and Engagement Division and is designed to provide graduate students with an opportunity to gain real-world experience conducting research to inform both policy and practice from within a leading national higher education association. Representing the interests of campus executives and leaders of higher education associations and organizations, ACE provides leadership on key higher education issues and influences public policy and institutional practice through advocacy, research, and programmatic initiatives.
Working with the Division’s research team, graduate research associates help to produce original papers, issue briefs, and convenings that provide policy audiences and institutional leaders with acute insight, rigorous analysis, and on-the-ground application. Key areas of research and focus include: 1) equity-minded leadership; 2) globally engaged and effective institutions; and 3) successful and mobile students. The research team approaches the study of higher education through the use of varying methodologies and data sources. Analytical frameworks include those found in research on educational equity, education policy, organization and systems management, and innovation. A number of national datasets, including those produced by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Census Bureau, are also commonly used.
In addition to contributing to the research of the Division, graduate research associates participate in a variety of professional development activities throughout the year. These activities are intended to help associates explore potential career paths as well as to broaden their knowledge in key areas such as higher education leadership, translating research to practice, survey design and research methods, and others. Many graduate research associates have gone on to assume positions as university faculty and staff and as researchers at both national associations and research firms.
Essential Job Duties or Tasks:
The primary responsibility of a graduate research associate is to support and work with the Division’s research staff to conceptualize, design, produce, and disseminate research that aligns with the Division’s three research areas. Graduate research associates are expected to attend internal meetings as well as conferences and events outside the organization. Applicants must be currently enrolled in or have recently completed an accredited master’s or doctoral degree program.
