Assistant Teaching Professor - Higher Education
Job Summary

The School of Education at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position beginning in August 2021. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing, diverse higher education administration program.

The Higher Education Administration graduate program faculty currently provide training with concentration in student affairs and higher education administration. We are especially interested in candidates whose training backgrounds include bridging research and practice.

The doctoral program emphasizes research mentorship, diversity, and graduate teaching. Our faculty have established records of scholarship in the areas of student affairs, residence life, and higher education. We aim to recruit applicants who will provide impactful instruction, and who will emphasize training graduate students to become productive and thoughtful practitioners.

The School of Education's Higher Education Administration programs include a Master of Education degree, a Doctor of Education degree, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Program delivery includes face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats. Qualified applicants will be prepared to contribute to the teaching mission of the School of Education at the graduate level. The School of Education has approximately 700 students across six different program areas.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach and mentor students across programs.
  • Direct action research studies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cultural competence.
  • Contribute to the mission of the university and profession through service activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Student Affairs or related area (by August 2021) and at least 3 or more years of professional experience in student affairs and/or higher education administration.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Adept in office systems and technology.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Resourceful and determined to provide a positive experience for others.
  • Detail oriented Ability to anticipate needs

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Practice in high-impact areas such as residence life and academic advising.
  • Research areas include focus on underrepresented and underprepared populations.
  • Strong interest in teaching foundational student affairs courses including history, helping skills theory, and foundations of practice.
  • Interest/background in teaching higher education courses including law, finance, and guided capstone.
  • Experience mentoring student research.
  • Ability to teach finance, strategic planning, and leadership theory.
