Assistant Professor-Tenure Track, Native American Education
Below is a general summary of key duties of full-time tenure-track assistant professors at UW Tacoma in the School of Education and the specific expectations of this position:
 
  • Teach 6 courses during the regular academic year (September-June) in areas of expertise based on the needs of the school.
  • This position will primarily support instruction in the current EdD Muckleshoot Cohort and teaching a Since Time Immemorial/STI course in our forthcoming BA in Education (expected launch in the 2022-2023 academic year). The candidate may teach in other programs based on areas of expertise.
  • Compensated summer teaching duties may also be available based on available resources and enrollments.
  • Actively participate in accreditation, assessment, curriculum development, program review, and related activities to assist the school with its ongoing continuous-improvement efforts.

Service expectations to the school, campus, and relevant external bodies include:
 
  • Serving on program-level, school-wide, campus/UW Tacoma, and/or UW committees as needed.
  • Maintain external relationships with local communities, school partners, state-level organizations, and Tribal Nations in the state to stay well-connected to current issues of professional practice. Specifically, we would expect this person to support the ongoing work of strengthening and maintaining our connections to Tribal Nations, Indigenous education entities, in addition to other community relationships within Washington State and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate, master’s, and/or doctoral students.
  • Maintain an active scholarly record appropriate for a UW faculty member in the rank of tenure-track assistant professor.

Requirements
  • Earned doctorate (or a foreign equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher education in the areas of educational leadership, educational policy studies, Native American Studies, teacher education, or a related field. Degree must be conferred by September 16, 2022.
  • Broad knowledge of P-12 school-based settings and systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise respectfully collaborating with Indigenous communities and Tribal Nations to advance community and educational goals.
  • Demonstrated expertise using and centering Indigenous pedagogies within P-12 settings or working within Indigenous education settings.
