Job Description:

The Director of Graduate Studies is the day-to-day operational supervisor for the College of Graduate Studies and is responsible for planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and supervision of all Graduate Studies functions. They are responsible for all academic and administrative elements of graduate student affairs, from inquiry to graduation. The Director supports the Dean of Graduate Studies and is the designated surrogate for the Dean on matters related to graduate education.

Based upon this position’s essential functions, it reports to the Graduate Studies Office (MSU, Mankato Campus), five (5) days a week, and does not have the option of telework.

Requirements
Required Qualifications:
 
  • Master’s degree or equivalent (conferred on an official transcript at the time of application).
  • Five (5) years of advanced professional experience in post-secondary education leadership, admissions or enrollment management, academic advising or related.
  • The capacity to apply an equity lens to supervision in Graduate Studies that includes social justice and anti-racism.

Preferred Qualifications
 
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of graduate education policies, procedures, and processes, including graduate student recruitment, admissions procedures, retention strategies, graduate faculty appointments, curriculum management, graduate assistant employment and responsibilities, and relevant Minnesota State system, Minnesota, and federal policies.
  • Experience managing budgets and supervising personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems and situations, develop solutions and plan projects, determine staffing and resource requirements, and assess project outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and consultative environment, interact with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to obtain support for initiatives and overcome resistance to change.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts within the framework of University and project objectives.
  • Advanced professional knowledge of international education and visa issues, including employment eligibility.
  • Advanced professional knowledge of graduate student recruitment and marketing strategies and tools.
  • Ability to use data to analyze situations, answer questions, report results, and make decisions.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
