Leadership Volunteer Opportunities
ASHE 2024 President-Elect/2025 President Eboni Zamani-Gallaher welcomes interests for a variety of standing committee vacancies.
For all these positions, we seek individuals who will provide outstanding leadership to an association committed to advancing excellent research and scholarship across the multiple and varied domains of higher education and contributing to the national discourse by linking higher education research and scholarship to policy and practice. In selecting individuals, we will be attentive to the vast diversity of ideas and perspectives, backgrounds and values, communities and commitments that our association represents, seeking leadership attentive to all.

Open Call for Leadership Volunteers
ASHE has several committees that help govern and run our Association (e.g., budget, nominations, publications). To see lists of current committees and members, Log-In to the ASHE website and click on "Committees & Groups" in the left menu of your "My Profile" section of the website.
Beginning in November, there will be a variety of committee vacancies. To get ahead of the process and allow for an efficient transition, ASHE 2025 President Eboni Zamani-Gallaher will be making recommendations for these upcoming vacancies to the board in the coming weeks.
Timeline & Process:
- Interest forms must be received no later than Thursday, September 19 at Noon Central/Minneapolis Time.
- ASHE President-Elect Eboni Zamani-Gallaher will develop a list of appointments for recommendation to the Board.
- Decisions will be sent out in early October.

To submit your interest, you can complete the Interest Form, which will ask for the following info:
- Name
- Organization/Institution
- Position/Title
- Email address
- A pdf copy of your CV/Resume
- A summary of any prior committee experience in ASHE, another scholarly or professional association, an institutional or organizational setting, or in your community. If you do not have any committee experience, please summarize other relevant involvement that positions you to contribute to our Association. (200 words maximum)
- A list of your previous involvement with ASHE, including service as a reviewer, session chair, session discussant, and/or presenter
- Agreement to ASHE Ethics, Membership, and Conflict of Interest policies

Advancement and Fundraising Committee
Upcoming Vacancies:
- 1 Chair, term 11/2024-11/2027
The committee on advancement and fundraising recommends and facilitates policies and practices regarding fundraising and assists in the association’s fundraising activities.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per month throughout the year
Consider joining this committee if:
- are interested and/or have experience with fundraising and
- want to give back to the Association by helping to guide its fundraising and advancement program

- 50th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign
- Review and update of ASHE Fundraising and Advancement Policies
- Continued support of ASHE fundraising initiatives
Awards Committee
Upcoming Vacancies:
- 2 members, Term: 11/2024-11/2027
The Awards Committee makes recommendations to the board concerning association awards.
Time Commitment: 10 hours total between March and September
Consider joining this committee if:
- enjoy reading about colleagues and their outstanding work from across the field;
- can provide reliable feedback on dissertations; and
- have time in July and August to read 5-8 15-page dissertation abstracts (first round of judging) and 1 full dissertation (final round of judging)
Bobby Wright Dissertation of the Year Committee
Upcoming Vacancies:
- 3 Members, Term: 11/2024-11/2027
The Bobby Wright Dissertation of the Year Committee sets the criteria for award nominations, reviews nominations, and makes the final recommendation on the award recipient.
Time Commitment: 15-20 overall, mostly in July and August
Consider joining this committee if:
- enjoy reading dissertations from across the field;
- can provide reliable feedback on dissertations; and
- have time in July and August to read 5-8 15-page dissertation abstracts (first round of judging) and 1 full dissertation (final round of judging)
Budget, Finance, and Compliance Committee
Upcoming Vacancies:
- 2 members, Term: 11/2024-11/2027
- 1 Graduate Student member: 11/2024-11/2027
The Budget, Finance, and Compliance Committee reviews financial reports, analyzes data, and makes recommendations to the ASHE Board on financial policies and strategies.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per month
Consider joining this committee if:
- are interested and/or have experience with budget, finance, and/or management and
- want to give back to the Association by helping supporting it financial viability.
Upcoming Projects:
- Continued management of ASHE's investment portfolio and new endowment.
- Review of ASHE's Budget, Finance, and Compliance Policies.
- On-going monitoring of financial data.
Ethics Committee
Upcoming Vacancies:
- 3 Ad Hoc members, Term: 11/2024-11/2027
- 1 Graduate Student Member, Term: 11/2024-11/2025
The Ethics Committee advances ethical professional and interpersonal conduct through its primary role and responsibility of considering concerns or complaints about alleged misconduct by those participating in or executing the programs of ASHE.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per month
Consider joining this committee if:
- are interested and/or have experience with ethics;
- are able to maintain the confidentiality of cases that may arise; and
- are able to intertwine compassion and accountability.
Upcoming Projects:
- Continued management of ethics cases brought before the committee.
- Review and update of ASHE's Ethics Policies.
- Completion of ASHE's Scholarly Ethics Policies.
Graduate Student Scholarship Committee
Upcoming Vacancies:
- 1 Vice-Chair, Term: 11/2024-11/2025 as Vice Chair, 11/2025-11/2026 as Chair
- 1 Member, Term: 11/2024-11/2025
The Graduate Student Scholarship Committee sets the criteria for scholarship applications, assigns reviewers, and makes the final recommendation on the scholarship recipients.
Time Commitment: 5-6 hours total, mostly in June-August
Consider joining this committee if:
- have experience with and/or are interested in scholarship processes and
- are a graduate student (at least 3 of the 5 members of the committee must be graduate students).
Inclusion, Equity, and Organizational Diversity Committee
Vacancies:
- Vice chair, Term 11/2024-11/2027 (1 year as Vice, 1 year as Chair, 1 year as Past Chair)
- 1 member, Term: 11/2024-11/2027
- 1 graduate student member, Term:11/2024-11/2025
The Inclusion, Equity, and Organizational Diversity Committee is responsible for:
- the implementation of the Association’s IEOD Statement and Commitments
- any related policies to implement this statement (including integrating IEOD standards into existing policies)
- annual reporting of the Association’s IEOD work to the membership
- convening leaders of ASHE’s Committees and recognized Entity Groups to provide an annual Association-wide report on IEOD initiatives and efforts to the membership as reported by the entity groups and committees
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per month

Nominations Committee

The Nominations committee manages the elections process for the board through soliciting nominations and recommending a the annual slate of candidate.
Time Commitment: 10 hours total, mostly between March and June

- you enjoy outreach and networking with other members
Outstanding Book Award Committee

- 4 members, Term: 11/2024-11/2027
The ASHE Outstanding Book Award Committee sets the criteria for award nominations, reviews nominations, and makes the final recommendation on the award recipient.
Time Commitment: 10 hours total, mostly in July and August
Consider joining this committee if:
- enjoy reading books;
- can provide reliable feedback on books; and
- have time in July and August to read 5-8 book nominations (first round of judging) and 1 full book (final round of judging).
Book Award Committee Members are provided with a complimentary copy of each nomination book that they may keep.
Professional Development Committee

The Professional Development Committee coordinates the association’s professional development events, including Council events, special initiatives, etc.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per month
Consider joining this committee if:
- are interested in learning about and/or have experience with ASHE's professional development events and
- have experience with developing and/or leading professional development programs.
Upcoming Projects:
- On-going support for ASHE professional development events.
- Continued review of member feedback and trends to develop new programs.
