Professional Bio

David’s first professional job was teaching English and world history at Instituto Laurens, A.C., in Monterrey, Mexico. In the years following, he taught Spanish in K-12 and in community colleges. Since 2002, he has held faculty appointments in higher education and community college leadership, first at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and then at Old Dominion University. In 2025, David accepted an appointment as associate professor at NC State University.

David completed a BS in Spanish and an MA in higher education with a graduate minor in Spanish language and literature, both from Appalachian State University. He earned an EdD in higher education administration from NC State University. Beyond the doctorate, David studied critical discourse analysis at Lancaster University (U.K), and he completed a Master of Studies in Law at the Wake Forest University School of Law. He received the 2019 Senior Scholar Award from the Council for the Study of Community Colleges. He currently serves as editor of Community College Review.
