Scholarships

To support the growth and development of graduate students, ASHE established the Graduate Student Travel Scholarship program in 2008. As of 2024, the program had awarded 356 scholarships. In recent years, ASHE members have significantly bolstered their support for graduate student members, enabling us to provide scholarships to a larger number of students. For 2025, we are announcing four new scholarships and extending opportunities to postdocs and early career members.

Scholarship applicants may apply for multiple scholarships but are only eligible to be awarded one scholarship per year and may only receive each scholarship only once.

​Funded through member donations, the ASHE Graduate Student Travel Scholarship supports graduate students attending the ASHE Annual Conference by helping offset travel costs. Whether it is presenting a poster or paper, networking with faculty members who they have read, or attending sessions or a pre-conference, ASHE has been integral at helping aspiring scholars begin their careers. 

For the 2025 Annual Conference, ASHE is committed to awarding at least 20 $400 travel scholarships to graduate students. Any donations received between now and July 16, 2025 will add to this allocation and allow us to support more students.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. A current member of ASHE.

  2. A graduate student at the time of application and at the time of the annual conference in November.

  3. Traveling to and participating in the annual conference.

  4. A first-time Graduate Student Travel Scholarship recipient.

Evaluation Criteria

When reviewing applications, the Scholarship Committee will make decisions based on the following preferred and demonstrated attributes:

  1. Significance of the applicant's need for funding. Scaled by reviewers 1-10.

  2. Significance of what the applicant will gain by attending the conference. Scaled by reviewers 1-10.

  3. Applicants who were accepted to present at the conference receive preference in the review process. Scholarship Committee provides +3 points if yes. This will be verified by the ASHE Staff. Note: Proposal decisions will be sent out in early July by the ASHE Program Committee.

  4. Applicants who serve in a volunteer role for the conference (e.g., session chairs) receive preference in the review process. Scholarship Committee provides +3 points if yes. This will be verified by the ASHE Staff. Note: Proposal decisions will be sent out in early July by the ASHE Program Committee.

  5. Applicants who serve in leadership volunteer roles for the association (e.g., Graduate Student Committee) receive preference in the review process. Scholarship Committee provides +3 points, if yes. This will be verified by the ASHE Staff.

  • Agreement to ASHE Ethics Policies (check box)

  • Confirmation that you are a current graduate student and will be through the annual conference in November 2025 (check box)

  • Agreement to the ASHE Ethics Policies

  • Requirements, Participation, Travel Information, and Acknowledgments

    • Agreement that you will be traveling to Denver for the annual conference.

    • Name of accepted conference presentation(s), if applicable.

    • Name of conference session(s) assigned as volunteer (e.g., session chair) and role, if applicable.

    • Name of committee/group and role in which you serve as an ASHE Leadership Volunteer, if applicable.

  • Agreement to Expectations for Recipients (check box; see below)
  • A budget for your estimated cost of attending the conference. This should only include the share of the costs you are personally responsible for. For example, if you are sharing a hotel room, please only include your portion of the hotel room as a cost. Items may include travel (e.g., airfare, parking, gas), lodging, and meals. Here is an example of what this -may- look like (this is only an example, and we acknowledge expenses will be different for everyone). Hotel: $400 (Splitting $800 cost with 1 roommate) Airfare: $300 Meals: $300 Taxi: $75 Registration: $0 (Registration fee covered through ProDev fund)

  • Other funding sources available to you for travel to the conference (e.g., departmental professional development funds, graduate student council funds, etc.).

  • Write a statement describing what you hope to gain by attending the conference. Please limit your response to fewer than 300 words. **Please ensure there is no personal identifying information (i.e., your name) included in your statement as this is a masked review process.

Apply for the Graduate Student Travel Scholarship

The Deborah L. Floyd Scholars Mentoring Scholarship embodies the Association’s commitment to fostering graduate student mentoring and professional development within the field of higher education. The Floyd Scholars Mentoring Scholarship has been established and endowed in honor of ASHE’s 50th Anniversary and is intended to provide a graduate student with a travel scholarship and/or provide ASHE conference registration.

Preference will be given to graduate students attending the conference as the “only graduate student” from their home institution in order to address the challenges of isolation and limited support. In years in which there are no qualified applicants whose fits this requirement, the ASHE Scholarship Committee can choose another qualified candidate for the award.

Recipients of the Floyd Scholar-Mentoring Scholarship recipients will be included in the Floyd Scholars well-established mentoring program established through the Florida Atlantic University Foundation, creating a robust network of current and past recipients and faculty mentors.

For the 2025 Annual Conference, ASHE is committed to awarding one scholarship of $500.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. A current member of ASHE.

  2. A graduate student at the time of application and at the time of the annual conference in November.

  3. A first-time Deborah L. Floyd Scholars Mentoring Scholarship recipient.

  4. Agreement and compliance with ASHE Ethics Policies.

  5. Traveling to and participating in the annual conference.

  6. The  “only graduate student” from their home institution attending the conference. 

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Significance of the applicant's need for funding. (Scaled by reviewers 1-10).

  2. Significance of what the applicant will gain by attending the conference. Scaled by reviewers 1-10.

The Reverend Doctor Jamie Washington & Reverend Sam Offer New Scholars Travel Scholarship embodies the Association’s commitment to fostering graduate student and post-doc professional development within the field of higher education. The ASHE Reverend Doctor Jamie Washington & Reverend Sam Offer New Scholars Travel Scholarship has been established and endowed by Reverend Doctor Jamie Washington & Reverend Sam Offer in honor of ASHE’s 50th Anniversary and is intended to support travel to the annual conference for ASHE graduate student or post-doc members whose research focuses on BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA2S+ Experiences. 

Preference will be given to those who study the intersection of these two identities. In years in which there are no qualified applicants whose research fits this requirement, the ASHE Scholarship Committee can choose another qualified candidate for the award. Preference will also be given to graduate students and post-docs who do not have another institution-based or grant funding for their travel to the annual ASHE conference.

For the 2025 Annual Conference, ASHE is committed to awarding one scholarship of $250.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. A current member of ASHE.

  2. A graduate student at the time of application and at the time of the annual conference in November.

  3. A first-time Reverend Doctor Jamie Washington & Reverend Sam Offer New Scholars Travel Scholarship recipient.

  4. Traveling to and participating in the annual conference.

  5. Researching BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA2S+ Experiences, with preference given to those who study the intersection of these two identities. 

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Significance of the applicant's need for funding. (Scaled by reviewers 1-10).

  2. Significance of what the applicant will gain by attending the conference. Scaled by reviewers 1-10.

Preference will be given to applicants who do not have other institutional or grant funding for their travel to the annual ASHE conference.

The ASHE HBCU/MSI Scholars Travel Scholarship embodies the Association’s commitment to supporting graduate students and early career (those within 3 years of receiving their doctoral degree) ASHE members’ professional development within the field of higher education. The ASHE HBCU/MSI Scholars Travel Scholarship has been established and endowed by Ken Redd in honor of ASHE’s 50th Anniversary and is intended to support travel and registration fees to the ASHE Annual Conference for ASHE graduate student and early career members who attend, work at, and/or research HBCUs or MSIs, including HSIs, TCUs, AANAPISIs, PBIs, and other institutions that serve minoritized students.  

For the 2025 Annual Conference, ASHE is committed to awarding one scholarship of $500.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. A current member of ASHE.

  2. A graduate student  or early career scholar (i.e., within 3 years of receiving their doctoral degree) at the time of application and at the time of the annual conference in November.

  3. A first-time HBCU/MSU Scholars Travel Scholarship recipient.

  4. Traveling to and participating in the annual conference.

  5. Attending, working at, and/or researching HBCUs or MSIs, including HSIs, TCUs, AANAPISIs, PBIs, and other institutions that serve minoritized students.  

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Significance of the applicant's need for funding. (Scaled by reviewers 1-10).

  2. Significance of what the applicant will gain by attending the conference. Scaled by reviewers 1-10.

Preference will be given to applicants who do not have other institutional or grant funding for their travel to the annual ASHE conference.

Apply for the HBCU/MSU Scholars Travel Scholarship

The Graduate Student Impact Scholarship embodies the Association’s commitment to fostering graduate student professional development within the field of higher education. The ASHE Graduate Student Impact Scholarship has been established and endowed by a Dr. Kimberly Griffin in honor of ASHE’s 50th Anniversary and is intended to provide both a graduate student membership and a $50 credit to be applied to an ASHE Professional Development event for 3-4 student members each year.

For 2025, ASHE is committed to awarding 3 scholarships, which include a student membership and a $50 ASHE Professional Development event credit for any professional development event(s) (which must be used by November 2026).

Eligibility Criteria

  1. A current member of ASHE.

  2. A graduate student at the time of application and at the time of the annual conference in November.

  3. A first-time Graduate Student Impact Scholarship recipient.

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Significance of the applicant's need for funding. (Scaled by reviewers 1-10).

  2. Significance of what the applicant will gain by membership in ASHE and attendance at an ASHE Professional Development event. (Scaled by reviewers 1-10).

Application Requirements

Apply for the Graduate Student Impact Scholarship

Review Process

Each application will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. The review is a masked review and identifying information of each applicant should be removed prior to distribution to the committee. Any reviewer who identifies a conflict of interest will have the specific review re-assigned. The rubric used will be based on the criteria listed above to ensure objectivity and consistency in review.


Expectations of Recipients

As a recipient of this scholarship, applicants agree to the following:

  • I am a member at the time of application and will maintain continued membership and engagement with ASHE.

  • For Travel Scholarships:

    • I will register to attend the Annual Conference by August 31, 2025 and will attend the annual conference in Denver from November 12-15, 2025. If I am unable to attend the annual conference, the scholarship funds must be returned to ASHE.

    • I will sign up for a volunteer shift(s) by August 31, 2025 and will serve four hours during the annual conference helping with conference check-in. If I am unable to serve four hours during the annual conference, the scholarship must be returned to ASHE.

  • I will submit a thank you letter or video to ASHE scholarship fund donors. More information will be sent to you after the conference.

  • I will serve as a reviewer for the 2026 scholarship process. The scholarship committee will reach out to you in summer 2026. This is a 3-4 hour commitment in July/August.


Scholarship Timeline

  • Early June: Scholarship Applications Open

  • Early July: Conference acceptance decisions and volunteer assignments sent out

  • July 11, 2025, 12:00pm Mountain/Denver Time: Scholarship Applications Close. Due to the number of submissions and the review process, no late submissions will be accepted; as such, nominators are encouraged to submit their nominations well in advance of this deadline. 

  • July-August: Scholarship reviews completed by reviewers and the Scholarship Committee

  • Mid-August: Scholarship decisions emailed

  • August 31, 2025: Registration & Volunteer due date for travel scholarship recipients

  • Early October: Scholarship checks mailed to travel scholarship recipients
