Event Details
As the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) prepares for the 2025 conference in Denver, this year’s Council on International Higher Education (CIHE) Pre-Conference Keynote will consider the artistic encounter as a form of public pedagogy and intellectual engagement. In this keynote, Dr. Amy Scott Metcalfe will introduce the notion of transnationalism for transnational purposes, “bending the arc” of higher education internationalization away from nationalistic definitions.
Dr. Metcalfe presents recent work by the artist Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972 in Osaka, based in Berlin), specifically the installation of Home Less Home (2025), commissioned by and displayed at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston’s ICA Watershed venue, as part of the Boston Public Art Triennial 2025. In Home Less Home, Shiota interprets the (im)mobility of human memory as the interaction between household objects and narratives from community member collaborators, visual and textual testimonies that recount both transnational movement and personal transformation. Encircled by a cascade of red and black hanging string, Shiota’s installation gives form to a sense of being that is no less, and no more, at home in several places at once.
Dr. Metcalfe will encourage participants to reflect upon their own journeys and intellectual trajectories, with the intention of re-imagining our aspirations and expectations of higher education
internationalization.
