The ASHE Outstanding Book Award recognizes a book that makes a significant contribution to the study of higher education. The award is open to any book published within the last year that advances theories, knowledge, practices, pedagogies, and/or policies in the field of higher education. In this fireside chat, 2025 ASHE Outstanding Book Award recipient Crystal R. Sanders discusses "A Forgotten Migration." Her work explores Black southerners’ pursuit of graduate education under segregation, the state-sponsored out-of-state scholarships used to maintain “separate but equal,” and the enduring debt owed to historically Black colleges and universities today.
