Professional Bio

Laura I. Rendón is a nationally-recognized student advocate, scholar and contemplative educator. She is Professor Emerita at the University of Texas-San Antonio, and she earned a doctorate in higher education administration at the University of Michigan.
Rendón grew up in a low-income, single-parent household along the U.S. Mexico border in Laredo, Texas. As a first-generation student, she is the first in her family to attend college and to earn a college degree.
Rendón is a passionate advocate for low-income, first-generation students who she feels have hopes and dreams but often do not know how to realize them without proper resources. Rendón is the author of Sentipensante Pedagogy: Educating for Wholeness, Social Justice and Liberation, and she has an extensive list of scholarly publications.
Rendón has received numerous awards including the Distinguished Alumni Award for Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan and the Outstanding Alumni Award at San Antonio College. She also received the Howard Bowen Distinguished Career Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education. In addition, the Race and Equity Center at the University of Southern California recognized Rendón as one of the nation’s most distinguished Latina Scholars.
