This workshop offers participants behind-the-scenes knowledge of publishing an academic book. The workshop is divided into four broad parts: planning, writing, production, and promotion. Presenters will guide participants through essential steps in the process, that include identifying a book concept, crafting a compelling proposal, and devising an effective promotional strategy.

Joshua Travis Brown is an author, professor, and researcher examining the intersection of public policy, finance, and higher education. An Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University and SKOPE Fellow at the University of Oxford, his work explores how economic policies have reshaped tuition-driven colleges and universities. He is the author of Capitalizing on College: How Higher Education Went From Mission Driven to Margin Obsessed (Oxford University Press, 2025).

Kevin R. McClure is Professor of Higher Education and Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He is an expert on college leadership, management, and workplace culture, especially at broad-access institutions. Dr. McClure writes the popular Working Better column at The Chronicle of Higher Education. He is the author of The Caring University: Reimagining the Higher Education Workplace after the Great Resignation (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2025).

Ilana M. Horwitz is an Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies and Sociology at Tulane University. Dr. Horwitz takes a sociological approach to examine how people’s religious upbringing, race, ethnicity, social class, and gender shape their life course, especially their educational experiences. She is the author of God, Grades, and Graduation: Religion’s Surprising Impact on Academic Success (Oxford University Press, 2022), and The Entrepreneurial Scholar: A New Mindset for Success in Academia and Beyond (Princeton University Press, 2025).

Greg Britton directs the acquisitions of Johns Hopkins University Press’s books and works closely with editors and other book publishing staff. He also acquires books in education studies. In 2018,  he received the Council of Independent Colleges’ Academic Leadership Award on behalf of the Press. He seeks high-impact work that spotlights the essential role educational institutions—especially colleges and universities—play in our society.
