This Research Workshop will be held in person during the ASHE 2026 Annual Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. For conference registration information, please visit: https://www.ashe.ws/events/conference

This workshop will introduce participants to Endarkened Photovoice Methodology. Conceptually grounded from a special issue of Departures in Critical Qualitative Research, participants will learn foundational Black thought that informs the approach and practice endarkened image making and analysis to equip them with tools to implement the approach or advise others.

TJ Stewart, Iowa State University
Terah J. Stewart, PhD (he/him) is graduate faculty member and an associate professor of higher education and student affairs at Iowa State University. His research and writing focus on people, populations, and ideas that are hypermarginalized and/or those who have have stigmatized identities. His work centers critical disruptive onto-epistemological frameworks and theories to destabilize dominant ways of knowing and being; including Black/endarkened feminist, womanist, and afropessimist perspectives. He Co-Edited the special issue introducing An Endarkened Photovoice Methodology.

Roshaunda Breeden, NC State University
Roshaunda Breeden, PhD (she/her) is an assistant professor in the Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development at North Carolina State University. In her work, she seeks to create equitable learning environments for Black students, Black leaders, and Black communities. She also uses art-based and participatory approaches in her scholarship, to make research and scholarship engaging and accessible for all.

Robin Phelps-Ward, Ball State University
Robin Phelps-Ward, Ed.D., (she/her) is the Associate Dean of the Graduate School and an Associate Professor of Higher Education at Ball State University. Phelps-Ward is a Black feminist higher education scholar dedicated to cultivating equitable and just environments for people from minoritized backgrounds through liberatory pedagogy, participatory research, and culturally relevant leadership. With more than 15 years of experience teaching at the collegiate level, Phelps-Ward’s pedagogy and leadership centers social justice and intersectionality.

Charles H. F. Davis III, University of Michigan
Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III is an Assistant Professor in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education. His current research and teaching broadly focus on issues of race and racism, systems of oppression, and structures of domination in U.S. higher education and its social contexts. In particular, his current ethnographic work uses traditional and visual methods to explore how Black campus and community activists build and exercise political power to drive social and institutional change.
